This whole time change thing is really throwing us off. Since we can't really read the clock, we tend to do things when it feels like it's time to do them. But Jennifer insists on following the clock (actually, it's the people who expect her to show up at places like work at a predictable time who insist on it). So the other night when Jennifer went to bed it felt too early to Shelby. Normally, Shelby follows Jennifer around while she gets ready for bed, and then curls up next to her and goes to sleep. But this night, Jennifer realized Shelby wasn't with her when she was turning out her lights. So, she called his name. He immediately came trotting into the room and looked up at her expectantly. "Come on," Jennifer said. "Time to go to bed." And Shelby hopped up and lay down. Wow, Jennifer said. "You're really smart. You know your own name, come when you're called and do what you're told."
When Thalia heard this story, she had to scoff. That doesn't prove he's smart. In fact, quite the opposite. Thalia says she knows her name perfectly well and is quite capable of coming when called and following directions. But she's not stupid enough to let a human run her life.
